The fifth book is called The Devil's Backbone.

It is 6 months later than book 4. Niki ends up splitting her time between being with Lucifer and help souls as Death. Lucifer ends up missing and Niki tries to find him. She does but he has been turned into a dog or hellhound. There is a group of people called the Grace. They are witches who had gotten archangel power during the wars (Book 3). They took a 'Abnormal' boy who can tear holes between worlds. There is the world with humans, heaven and hell but there are other worlds also. Some were made especially to imprison gods who can easily destroy a lot of people. So these gods are running around on earth (world with humans) killing people.

The creator has given up. Niki makes a deal with one god to bring Lucifer back to his more human shape. But the world and its fate is on Niki's shoulder.

I read the first four books in a row. I did not read book 5 right away because they are dark even though I thought book 4 ended up on a happier note. In fact, book 4 had nice closure for me on most topics.

I did finally start reading book 5 because I thought I did not want to forget the storyline up to it. It is very dark. Niki is constantly told to make sacrifice. She keeps trying to save them.

It was very hard to me to read this book. The others were dark but this one was very dark. I am not sure about the ending. I missed why Niki's family (her mother, Sasha, Sofi, Cassandra followed Typhoon to the pits of hell. The judgement day with a new creator to start over. But I did not really feel that elated at the end - just a lot of sadness.

yes, this book was the saddest of them. Niki's and Lucifier's family all grabbed on to Typhoon (cloaking him in death) and literately drug him to the pits with them. Lucifer wasn't strong enough to condemn Typhoon to the Pitts alone, but he could condemned them to the Pitts and they used their strength to help Lucifer by dragging Typhoon with them "the Sacrifice". because they were condemned to the Pitts Their souls would not be reborn into the new world that Niki created out of Briah.

Niki then unmade Hell and the Pitts with it and everything was dumped in to the Unsung for eternity. She walled off Sheol in the Unsung keeping the souls safe for the Rapture in Briah. I get the impression that the other gods ended up stuck on earth with no way to travel between worlds with the the Unsung now being the home of Typhoon? or did she unmake earth also?

Got it on my mind to change my ways, but I don't think I can be anything other than me.

Thanks for the reasoning on why they grabbed Typhoon. It makes more sense to me now. I had trouble with the reading the last part of the book when Niki tries one more time to fight this without bringing in the Scourges. I skimmed some pages there.

I thought that the other gods were left on earth and earth was still there. So I don't think she unmade it. It sounded like to me that eventually it could recover (when all the gods are dead?) so that it could be repopulated by the new Creator.

There is hope there in Niki, Lucifer and the unborn daughter who is the new creator and the people now in Heaven. But a tiny hope amidst a lot of destruction.
