After doing some looking around, I've come to the conclusion that currently no decent chat environment exists for Connie's fans to trade thoughts. I've checked the facebook group, but honestly, I dislike FB in general and it's chat functions in specific.
Now, the forums are nice and generally fulfill the discussion needs of a community quite well, but occasionally a real-time chat is just useful. Therefore, I'd like to propose opening and operating an IRC channel for the forumites and other fans who may wander in. There are a couple of reasons why I'm suggesting this, given that there was apparently an experiment with a forum integrated chat.
1: An IRC channel is simple to acquire, free to run, simple to maintain and most importantly easy to use. There are dozens of networks and hundreds of possible servers already in existence, and creating a channel won't cost a dime. Plus it needs minimal maintenance, and at least I myself am available to help maintain and moderate the channel if there aren't many others with IRC experience. Based on my experience, I'd recommend Sorcery.net for network. I've currently got the channel #LeAthVeronis on Sorcery reserved, so should this get adopted, it will be guaranteed to be available.
2: Integrating an IRC chat applet which connects directly to a predetermined channel onto the forums isn't all that hard to do, thus negating the need for a forum-specific chat system.
Those are my thoughts on the matter, as I think an IRC channel would be a useful thing to have. I will admit to promoting this also for the simple reason that social networks are stealing users from IRC, which is a great system, and I wish to introduce new people to it. Along with these closing thoughts, I'll leave a few pertinent links here for consideration.
I tossed the chat module because it was basically too distracting and buggy to boot. I have found a better commercial module that I plan on adding near term ... within a couple months.
I have used IRC and have nothing against it, but I am reluctant to link into an external IRC server (tos / legal responsibilities).
If you want to set up a channel and post the client log in info I have no issue with that.
Reading is a gift to yourself that you can share with everyone.
That life which thinks it's real took a small toll of my time recently, hence I'm only posting this now.
Anyway, I went ahead and registered a channel for our use. Currently I'm the only operator, but if any forum mods show up, I can set them up as well.
In any case, the channel's up and running, and can be found at IRC network Sorcery.net (server address irc.sorcery.net) and channel name is #LeAthVeronis. If anyone has any questions about IRC clients, usage or connecting, check my first post in the thread and feel free to toss a question.
There's also Sorcery.net's own web applet which can be used for ultra-easy access: just replace channel and nickname fields with #LeAthVeronis and whatever you want. It's here:
Sorcery Web Applet
Anyway, it's now up and running and I certainly hope we'll see some activity there. I've always found IRC to be an excellent community tool for real-time discussion. Should I post this log-in info somewhere else as well?
