1st Snippet - Posted 1/4/15

"Call me Lafe—it's shorter and better," LaFranza instructed. His language was one I'd never heard before; nevertheless, I understood it perfectly. He was tall, with bulging muscles in his arms and dark eyes that held a strange fold at the corners, lending them an unusual shape.

Still, he was pleasing to look upon and when he removed his shirt whenever the temperature warmed inside his living quarters, I discovered he was covered with the evidence of his art.

Eagles, such as I'd never seen before, decorated arms, chest and back, with colors so vibrant the sight almost made my breath stop. "Do you know anything about the art of tattooing skin?" he asked, the corners of his mouth curling in an almost-smile.

"I don't really like supporting one criminal against another," Kooper huffed, bringing us back to a heated debate we'd already had before arriving on Wyyld II.

"It's the only solution we have," I pointed out. "Juffa is the path to all the others, and if some of them are allied with Cayetes, we need to know who and we need to know now."

"I understand that," Kooper grumped. "I just don't like that Bel has been shoved into that—he has no experience in this sort of thing."

He'd hit the sore spot with me and he knew it—Bel Erland. While Erland wasn't saying it, he was now worried that Bel was in such close proximity to the criminal who ran everything on Vic'Law.

"Come after me harder than that—you'll only make your opponent mad with that kind of thrust," Salidar snapped.
He'd agreed to teach me knife fighting. I thought I was getting good at it.

I was wrong.

Gran always said Sal had ninja skills, whatever that meant and whatever a ninja was. I was beginning to realize that you never saw a ninja coming; Sal was so fast, he was mostly a blur.

"If you're going to be my assistant in the shop, we'll have to do something about your wings," Lafe mused while studying my feathers. I pulled them tighter against my body, suddenly terrified. Would he cut them away? I backed up and into Terrett.

Waving a hand and shaking his head, Terrett let me know that cutting my wings wasn't an option. Lafe verified Terrett's denial. "I think we should dye them, perhaps. Along with your hair. What you have will stand out anywhere. We don't need to stand out. I imagine that black wings won't raise such a fuss—I know of some who've had mechanical black wings grafted upon their backs and they fly—after a fashion."

"But," I began. How was he going to dye my wings black? Dyed hair was common; wings were not.

"I'm a master at mixing inks and dyes," Lafe lifted a dark eyebrow as he studied me. "My tattoo colors are the best. That's why my business is so good. I figure we'll have to dye your feathers every three or four eight-days, just to ensure that they stay black," he mused as he walked around me.

"What's your name?" he asked as he faced me once more. For a moon-turn, he'd allowed me to mourn while Terrett did his best to feed and clothe me properly. Now, it was time to repay Lafe's generosity.

"Uh, Quin," I hung my head.

"No. Quin it is not. After we dye your wings black, that will be your name. BlackWing."

And now, some thoughts derived from Snippets. These are not spoilers, I don't know anything, I'm just pondering. If I should move this a separate discussion thread, someone let me know?

First Snippit
The first snippet doesn't have a definite character POV - however, it sounds to me like Quin's "voice", especially when a foreign language is instantly understood. After hunting, I found LaFranza in " Other Worldly Ways ".

Devin: "LaFranza. The tattoo artist who'd designed Crane and Dragon's tattoos. He was a legend from that time..."

....which hints to me, anyway, that he would now be a member of one of the Immortal races?
(i.e. Saa Thalaar (who we've heard nothing about in ages I note) or Ra'ak)
(Assuming Quin is not moving around the timeline and in the past.)

Also, from the way Quin notices his - a-hem - physical attributes, chances seem good for Lafe as a potential Falchani mate.


Second Snippit
Sounds like discussion of non-Alliance Worlds and investigation, therein.
Bel is involved but I haven't seen anything elsewhere that would give us a good hint on his age at this point. Inexperienced does not equal young, as in, younger than late teens/early twenties. I think it more likely Bel is doing a stint as an ASD agent, and he is on one of his first assignments.

(I also wonder if Bel Erland will end up among Quin's mates, which would be kewl, except the whole 'Will Karathians still be a-holes about potential Queens from another race?" Reah as MiL, Ryland (who also hasn't been seen in a while) as DiL, Lissa as Grandma-in-Law....much happiness, yes?)

Third Snippit
Not a ton here (except seeing Lissa referred to as Gran - awesome!) and my only real thought would be this likely occurs before Bel gets "shoved into" whatever is happening on the non-Alliance worlds? Part of his training montage, so to speak?

(And perhaps Sali is grumpy because his Breanne is still MIA?)

Welcome back, it's good to see you again.

Snipet one - I'm also pretty sure it is from Quinn's POV. I believe Lafe was mentioned in other books as well, I'll have to look back to see which one(s) (High Demon IIRC). He's not immortal as far as we know, but that could change, and we don't know when the gate sent Quinn either. Since this is just a guess … I believe Quinn was relocated through time as well as space … also I suspect she will be doing a bit of bending time throughout the book as well to make some of the ends meet.

Snipet two / three - I think we are seeing the start of Bel's character development … hopefully it goes better than Reah's … lol.

Pondering The Cover

Thoughts behind spoiler tag, just in case.

Kyler you beat me to some speculation as I have just seen the cover on Connie's FB page .Yes I agree the orb has previously been known to change wing colour and it's not as if Connie hasn't been known to change a characters appearance dramatically, but never without some reason. Oh we will just have to await for the book to come out ....... Arghhhh I want it now
