Blood Wager ended before the beating ... book 2 Blood Passage has the beating in it.
Personally I lost all respect for Gavin in Blood Wager, he shows that regardless of his feelings he is way too invested in his job. Had he put his love for Lissa before the job the plane ride could have been very different. I believe that Lissa would be an even fiercer family protector if she had one mate that she could trust implicitly, her ability to truly trust was crushed by the foolish foursome Gavin, Griffin, Merrill, and Wlodek, but that's another topic.
Pony - I see your point, but if Lissa was a person that could be that unforgiving Winker and Gavin would not have lasted through book one.
