I'm inclined to agree with Alfred on that. I'm thinking about Lissa at the moment, who automatically recognised Ra ak without looking and the same for people with power, they seemed to know without the need for looking
Not sure why Ashe didn't recognize her then.... Except having his head up his *cough*
Still, I imagine all Brea needs to do is look at Hank, or even just go "looking"
She doesn't want to or is afraid to know, that's why she doesn't. She is expecting to read a human and a life with a lifestyle that scares the hell out of her, so she actively shields against knowing.
Dragon told Lissa that when he shields he can't see Raak and they can't see him, not sure if that translates to the mighty.
Lissa never shields, she picks them up with her nose.
1) Lissa does shield, but her nose is her primary means of identification ... she avoids looking as a personal preference.
2) Bree knows as a talent, which after learning how to shield, she stopped using all the time ... once again as a personal preference.
3) Assuming automatic recognition is neither, in my opinion, a valid or substantiated claim. Since the Saa Thallar can shield against looking assuming the levels above them can't or don't would be a mistake.
4) We have already seen that changes in the timeline(s) can have changes in the future "selves" as memories that they did not have before, compulsion can be used to "erase" memories, Bree can Change What Was ... taking a stance that something can't happen or didn't happen in the past base on what current present characters know ... well that kind of thinking will drive you nuts quick.
5) Anyone can be a Messenger, i.e. by posting here you are a messenger for yourself ... rank (real or imagined) has nothing to do with it.
Reading is a gift to yourself that you can share with everyone.
Ah, so when someone changes something in the past memories appear, but when Bree changes what was, that is an absolute so "just is" as if it always had been, so virtually (not completely) undetectable. Hrm, that could be useful in working out who did what. I'm still a little suspicious about where Lissa sits n the scheme of things. She describes herself as being "like" a sister to The nameless ones, but at other times she calls herself a nameless one. Which is it and why isn't she as constrained as they are?
Another thing which I'm curious about is the whole light and dark thing. The light have Larentii, Saa Thalaar, and the nameless ones. The dark has Kifirin... Isn't there more? There doesn't seem to be balance there. I know Lissa is Dark but as she is also Light I'm discounting that. We often think of light/dark as good/evil but in this case it isn't so I'm discounting Ra Ak too. Oh it makes my head ache.
