Had an "Ah-Ha!" while reading through the In'Irdicti series which applies here. However, since I don't know who has read what at this point, I hide my thoughts.
Warning: Spoiler!
In the Book, Belen explains to the Saa Thalaar about Lissa's return from death and says:
"Yes, we now know how she is alive." Belen of the Nameless Ones had called Kiarra and Griffin to him. "And I admit; neither I nor any of my kind had anything to do with it. An unseen hand has performed this feat. One we do not direct."
.....
"This is the time she would have been reborn," Belen attempted to calm Kiarra. "Her life was given back to her without going through the rebirth. You will all know why, eventually."
...I re-read this in Blood Queen a week ago and wondered about it at the time if I missed when everyone found out why. Bree tells us later that Ashe was the one who held Lissa together and brought her back to herself. (Which was broadly hinted at with the "unseen hand" reference.) But I still didn't know why it was relevant to Ashe that Lissa remain Lissa.
The Ah-Ha was this: Ashe did it for Winkler. SO much of Winkler's remaining life on earth has him sad because he "lost" Lissa. So Ashe is determined to give Lissa (actual Lissa, not future incarnation Lissa) back to Winkler. This is kinda supported by Belen being the one who chooses Winkler for the Saa Thalaar later on. Ashe gets to give those kind of orders.
Thoughts?

I believe Belen choose Winkler because of how much the light side owes Lissa, he acknowledged that debt when he and Kifirin placed the bet napkin on the desk in the cellar Lissa awoke in.
Reading is a gift to yourself that you can share with everyone.
Kyler, I do agree with you. It may not be the only reason though. Winkler helped Ashe out in a father/mentor role when Ashe really needed it. Lissa though ends up helping Ashe a lot (in and after this book) so Ashe could keep hidden and Lissa was the front man (really front woman) of the actions.
Ashe's motivations for putting Lissa back together instead of letting her be reborn... interesting question.
I don't think it was just one motivation, but several. Only Connie would know what the main one was.
to add to the why's:
I would think maybe it had more to do with Griffin's trying to manipulate outcomes screwing up the natural progression of things. Had Griffin not interfered with things Lissa would have be Saa Thalaar and maybe everything would have went down a little different. Though she was the solution to his problem, and he did see her death in that battle.
Ashe also needed the Dark Realms brought in to check rather quickly and I don't think he wanted to wait for her to be reborn and get the experience she already had.
as JeanneM said, Ashe also needed to stay hidden and Lissa could do so much Good with his guidance.
or he did it just because he could
Got it on my mind to change my ways, but I don't think I can be anything other than me.
- The Pretty Reckless "Light Me Up"
Yeah, I kept pondering after the fact and it occurred to me another perfectly valid reason is that it would probably be a trick to get ANOTHER person who is 1/4 Bright Elemaiya and 1/4 Karathian Witch. Yes, she gets lots of kewl powers later when she makes the ranks of the Nameless Ones and then even higher. I think The Gods see the Dark Worlds need a Vampire Queen who is more than "just" a vampire, as Lissa was in her previous incarnation. (Claws, good fighter, no misting and such.)
At first I had a problem with Kylar's suggestion that Ashe held Lissa together for Winkler, given that Winkler was dead at the time. But with further thought I like it. Given Ashe is Ashe a little thing like Winkler being dead isn't insurmountable, perhaps future Ashe left his earlier self a note. I wonder if maybe Ashe didn't do it a little for himself as well, given that all his other blood relatives fall into the not very nice category and his parents were estranged around this time.
